Mr. Richards graduated from Yale University, holds a Master's Degree from the University of Bologna, and a Ph.D. from the University of Paris VIII. He began his work with Jerzy Grotowski in 1985. Initially at the Workcenter, Richards worked as Grotowski's assistant, then as the leader of one of the working teams, and after as Grotowski's "main collaborator". In the mid-1990s, Richards became Director of the Research Program on Performing Arts, supervising the Workcenter’s practical work. Richards was a fundamental driving force in the research developed  that has come to be known as “Art as Vehicle”, in which an approach to art goes hand in hand with an approach to the interiority of the human being. At the Workcenter, Richards directed “Action" and "The Letter”, was main director of “Downstairs Action”, and co-directed "One breath Left" and "Dies Irae: The Preposterous Theatrum Interioris Show”. He was also Artistic Director of the Workcenter’s international project "Tracing Roads Across”, which won three-year support from the “Culture 2000” Programme of the European Union.

At present, Mr. Richards directs two teams at the Workcenter: the Focused Research Team on Art as Vehicle and the Workcenter Studio in Residence. Their repertory at the moment, performed around the world, includes: "The Living Room", "The Underground: A Response to Dostoevsky", "L’Heure Fugitive", "Sin Fronteras" and “Gravedad". Mr. Richards has two new works in development: "Songs of Tradition" and “Han!"  Thomas Richards is author of “At Work with Grotowski on Physical Actions” (Routledge) and "Heart of Practice” (Routledge) which have been published in numerous languages of the world.
