The language of performance:

Everything that Happened and Would Happen is a new interdisciplinary project by Heiner Goebbels, an outstanding German composer and director. It's a performance involving 17 actors and musicians and a large multimedia installation.

The work was driven with Europeana: A Brief History of the Twentieth Century, a book written by Patrik Ouředník, a contemporary Czech author who now lives in France. It features the 20th century as a rhetoric figure and a sham, a ruthless mix of absurd mottoes, ridiculous beliefs and stereotypes. In 2001, Europeana was awarded as the Book of the Year in the Czech Republic. It is translated into twenty languages.

Everything that Happened and Would Happen describes 120 years of European history. One of the main visual images is a large-scale, animated landscape. The project includes set design created by Klaus Grünberg for Europeras, classics of John Cage's American musical minimal art performed by Heiner Goebbels in 2012 for Ruhrtriennale. Also, news from the No Comment block by Euronews are used in the video.

It's the second work Heiner Goebbels creates by Artangel's request. The first one was Stifter’s Dinge, a famous play with no actors (2008).

Everything that Happened and Would Happen is co-produced by Artangel, 14-18 NOW, Park Avenue Armory and Ruhrtriennale.

The world premiere took place in a historical building of a former railway station Mayfield. The world premiere was co-produced by Artangel and the Manchester International Festival.

All set elements originally designed by Klaus Grünberg for John Cage: Europeras 1&2 (directed by Heiner Goebbels, Ruhrtriennale 2012). Texts from Europeana by Patrik Ourednik. News Clips No Comment by Euronews.
