The Alash Ensemble will introduce the Japanese audience to khoomei, a traditional technique of Tuvan throat singing. The concert program Achay (which is Tuvan for “Father”) is dedicated to the memory of Kongar-Ool Ondar (1962-2013), a virtuoso performer and promoter of the art of Tuvan throat signing, and a People's Khoomeiji of Republic of Tuva.

All the participants of Alash Ensemble studied the khoomei technique of traditional singing since their childhood, first in their families then with masters of this art. In 1999, a group of students of the Kyzyl Arts College founded a music group that they initially called Changy-Khaya. They started looking for their music identity under the leadership of Kongar-Ool Ondar. Alash today not only performs national music but also enriches its expressive language with elements of European culture.
